Filter / Separator Cartridges — Quick Reference (English)

1) What These Are (Plain English)

Both belong to the same HC645 size class — a compressed air or gas filter/separator cartridge used to remove liquid droplets (oil/water mist) and fine particles from the gas stream.

• They are not hydraulic oil elements (different fluid, different housing pressure/temp ratings).

  
  

• The two suffixes describe the same filtration size with a different closure / hardware style.

  
  

The "01" vs "1" is the same length/size index — the real difference you care about on the floor is the closure style (wing-bolt vs standard) and making sure the O-ring seats every time.

2) What to Check Before Installation

On the filter housing nameplate/tag (on the head or bowl):

• Model line containing HC645…

  
  

• Max working pressure (bar / psi) and temperature range

  
  

• Port size (usually NPT or BSP threads for air lines)

  
  

• FLOW DIRECTION (arrow on the head or bowl — gas must flow the correct way or separation fails)

  
  

On the old cartridge (once out):

• Overall length & diameter (ruler check against the new one)

  
  

• Seal colour: both use NBR → black/dark grey.

  If yours is brown/red, stop — the housing may be specified for Viton/FKM and you need the correct variant.

  
  

• End style: note whether the cartridge has a centre stud (threads onto housing) or open ends (drops onto a centre tube).

  
  

3) Replacement Steps

A) Preparation

1. Isolate the filter (close upstream shut-off valve).

   
   

2. Open the drain (these separators collect liquid — relieve pressure slowly through the drain cock so it doesn’t spray).

   
   

3. Confirm pressure reads zero on the local gauge.

   
   

B) Bowl / Cartridge Removal

• HC645-01-C (standard closure): loosen the bowl retaining clamp/nut with proper tool → lift bowl straight.

  
  

• HC645-1-CWB (wing-bolt): loosen the wing-bolt by hand/crescent → swing the yoke → lift bowl straight.

  
  

C) Cartridge Swap

1. Pull the old cartridge straight out — check the housing interior for sludge/standing water (drain fully).

   
   

2. Wipe the sealing face clean → thin film of compatible lubricant on the O-ring (often a dab of the same system lubricant or recommended grease — follow housing label).

   
   

3. Seat the new cartridge square (centre it on the stud/tube — off-centre = leak/bypass).

   
   

4. Reinstall bowl:

   • -CWB: snug the wing-bolt until metal-to-metal contact + a small final tighten — don’t gorilla it or you’ll distort the bowl seat.

     
     

   • -01-C: torque clamp/nut evenly per the nameplate spec.

     
     

   
   

5. Close drain → slowly repressurise (crack the inlet valve gradually — you may hear brief foaming/pop as trapped liquid clears).

   
   

6. Check for air/condensate leaks and confirm the automatic drain operates if fitted.

   
   

4) Procurement — What to Write

• HC645-01-C

  → Cartridge for HC645 housing (01 length/size, NBR seal, standard closure). Supply exact match confirmed against housing nameplate model — no “equivalent size” substitute.

  
  

• HC645-1-CWB

  → Cartridge for HC645 housing (size 1, NBR seal, wing-bolt closure). Same housing family, different bowl latch — confirm wing-bolt/WB style matches your head casting before accepting.

Field Rule (keeps it simple)

Gas goes in the side → down/through media → clean gas out the top (on most coalescing housings).

If the arrow on the head points a different way, follow the arrow — not your memory.

And: if the bowl fills with liquid faster than the auto-drain can handle, the element is either oversaturated or the upstream dryer/stages are failing — changing the cartridge alone won’t fix that root cause.
