1) What These Are (Practical View)

Both are internal-style filter codes attached to specific filter housings / lubrication skids / hydraulic units in your plant.

They do not explain themselves by digits alone, so the only safe method is to verify them against the housing nameplate and the old element dimensions.

• 0391-00-490-T: often found on duplex / lube-oil filter elements or inserts (thin-oil circulation, gearbox lube circuits). The last letter T usually points to a seal/temperature option—commonly Viton/FKM in higher-temperature lube-oil systems.

  
  

• 1051-04-017-C: more typical of a pipe-mounted return guard or small canister element; the last letter C normally points to an NBR seal (black/grey, mineral-oil duty).

  
  

If you see a brown/red O-ring on 0391…, that confirms “T” as the higher-temp compound.

If you see a black/grey O-ring on 1051…, that confirms “C” as NBR. Any mismatch means the wrong spare was stored—check before fitting.

2) On-Site Verification (do this once, then it’s permanent)

For each position, read two things and write them on the BOM line:

1. Housing nameplate (on the filter head/body, near the ports)

   • Model / series (contains 0391… or 1051…)

   • Port size or DN

2. Old element (ruler is enough)

Rule: if the nameplate is painted over, use the measured dimensions + seal colour as your “real authority.”

3) Replacement Steps (same safe sequence for both)

1. Stop the pump / isolate the circuit.

   Open the vent/bleed screw until pressure reads zero (even lube circuits can hold a surprising burp).

   
   

2. Drain if fitted (duplex housings usually have a drain plug—catch the oil).

   
   

3. Open the cover / clamp:

   • Duplex-style (0391…): switch the handle to the other side first if possible.

     
     

   • Canister-style (1051…): support the bowl so it doesn’t hang on the piping.

     
     

   
   

4. Lift the element straight out—do not lever against the bowl.

   
   

5. Check the bottom/settling area for bright metal particles (gear / bearing wear warning).

   
   

6. Wipe sealing faces clean. Put a thin film of clean system oil on the O-ring—no grease, no sealant.

   
   

7. Seat the new element square on the centre locator / support tube.

   
   

8. Close vent → refill if oil was lost → restart → confirm no seepage and no constant red on ΔP.

   
   

4) Procurement — What to Write (so Stores cannot “approximately” substitute)

• 0391-00-490-T

  → Issue / reorder against the housing model stamped on the head. State: “Seal option T (often Viton/FKM); confirm OD / H / centre bore from our existing element before delivery. No substitute by ‘looks the same’.”

Quick decision rule for your crew
